[Sheflug] OSS in schools
Dear All
I went to the FLOSSIE conference (FLOSS in Education) a couple of weeks
ago. People were upbeat because of the recent BECTA report that found
that the total cost of ownership per PC in schools using FLOSS was 56%
in primaries and 76% in secondaries of the cost of using proprietary
software. However there was no-one at the conference from schools that
didn't already use FLOSS.
I'm having a go at addressing this problem. I'm going to try to get
heads, governors or teachers from none-FLOSS schools to a conference at
Firth Park Community Arts College. There'll be talks from Parrs Wood
school in Manchester (who have a stategic committment to FLOSS) and
hopefully from someone who runs the INGOTS scheme and who's associated
with Schoolforge. I also want to give schools the opportunity to meet
people who could support FLOSS in their school (either commercially or
voluntarily) and who could demonstrate FLOSS in action (servers, CMS,
desktops, Office software, VLE) on the day.
Would anyone out there be interested in coming along? If you would, let
me know and I'll give you some more details. Date and time are 28
September 2005, 3.30-7pm.
Thanks
David Willington
