might help with the SAGEM. And strangely enough

I can't spot anything specific for the Origo even on
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ .
http://www.linuxhardware.org/ might be useful. As might
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/ .
I had an Alcatel Speedtouch USB for a while and there were some
difficulties getting it to work with SuSE in early 8.2 but I believe the
drivers for that modem were included in kernels > 2.4.20. However, I've
moved on to a D-Link DSL300T modem because I want to use BSD stuff and
Ethernet really is so much less trouble on both BSD and Linux platforms.
The UK works with PPPoA and VPI/VCI of 0/38. Typical modem setting is
G.DMT but your ISP should have given you these details along with
everything else.
What I favour with Zen is that it is a one month rolling contract which
is practically terminate when you like. They offer 1 fixed IP address
or 8 fixed IP addresses but they use 3 of those for mail and name
servers and routing.
Demon also offers a fixed IP address but they used to require a full
year's contract.
Never had a problem with either of those, but not much joy with NTL and
Tiscali caused me much grief with hijacked browsers and config files in
the days of NT.

Lesley
Thank you very much for a very thorough answer. Quite a lot to look at and
digest there. :)
I have not had a lot of trouble with Tiscali...... occasional connection
problems. I'm used to MSN going down and want to move away from Microsoft
(again) because it is do unstable. I just hope that I can get the most
reliable ISP for when I start promoting my business.
