Hi
On the subject of notation apps, and music software in general, an alternative to installing individual pieces of software (I know from experience there can be problems) would be to use one of the music orientated live cds available - although they are a much larger download - e.g. AGNULA Live (Debian based), APODIO (Mandrake based), Dynebolic, m-dist (limited selection but only a 150 Mb). A quick Google search will find them.
I have copies of recent releases of these and would be happy to drop one off for anyone at Access Space <www.lowtech.org> if you contact James Wallbank there or contact me.
Access Space has two pcs on which I have installed large selection of audio and midi software (Planet CCRMA <www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/>). If you want to try anything before you install, just drop in there.

best
Jake
