In defense of the Ubuntu root strategy it does have some benefits that are not
at first apparent.
In Ubuntu to get things done that require root privileges, means that you have
to start at the command line. Following How To's means that you have the
benefit of seeing how the Linux tools work without a GUI, and gives you
confidence in using a terminal.
In other words Ubuntu, in binning root, forces the new user (coming from
Windows) to use the command line from the start - giving the user confidence
in this tool.
I have learnt more in a couple of months using Kubuntu than I learnt in a year
or so of using Souse. It might have been very frustrating at times but it has
forced me away from the GUI and made me understand a little bit more about
the way Linux works. Bit by bit it is weaning me off my Windows bread GUI
dependency...
In other words Ubuntu is in essence an excellent introduction to Linux. It is
also when up and running very, very, usable. In my opinion it is one of the
distros that is most likely to get Windows users to stick to Linux.
