Geoff,
	  I noticed that you are referring to XFree86 whereas I'm sure the latest 
Ubuntu uses Xorg. Are you using an old Ubuntu release, if you are, then maybe 
the latest version may be a little more successful at detecting/setting up 
your graphics for you.
