I had this problem at first. I did the following and somewhere along the line 
it worked.
As root, try running xdebconfigurator in a terminal.
I'm running gnome desktop. Click on applications,desktop preferences, then 
screen resolution and choose your desired resolution.
Do the same again but choose keyboard and the layout tag, the rest should be 
self explanatory.
