I think Kubuntu has a my computer icon on the desktop. Click on that
after connecting your usb drive and see if it shows up there.

I'm sure Thunderbird will be trying to open the link in Firefox or
Mozilla which is not installed by default in Kububtu. That's why
nothing happens. Can't remember where, there is an option to set up
what you want as default behaviour. Under ubuntu it was menu>system
>preferences or something similar.
