I would be doubtful the MBR was touched - the hard drive would have no
reason to access that part of the drive, so the chance of dodgy data
getting written would, I think, be pretty remote.

I would be thinking more along the lines of the / filesystem being in a
bad state, but you don't say whether or not the filesystem was
journalled. If a superblock had been torched, it could be that grub was
having difficulty finding the kernel to boot.
