>From what I remember the filesystem is ext3 (on both hard drives). I've not delved into
  filesystems so can't remember what I used or why and haven't yet worked out
 how to identify it after installation. It's quite often this sort of
 thing that gets me googling so that next time I make more enlightened
 decisions
