Yes, and so are i486 and i586. That doesn't help me choose the best one for 
this chip.

As it happens, that's the one I've plumped for, and it seems ok so far (I 
have a bootable, basic system on which to build X and co, after ditching 
the previous effort). However, it would not have worked at all on an old 
dual-Celeron board I had until last week, whose chips predated i686 by some 
time (I bought them a long time ago).

You haven't followed my meaning. I wasn't asking which package to install, 
which is pretty obvious, but the detailed configuration 
in /usr.src/linux/.config. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.

No it isn't. It doesn't tell me anything to help me map chip names and dates 
to kernel configuration values - that's why I asked.

Sorry, but I've ditched the logs now, so it'll have to wait until I get 
there again in a few days' time. I had made a tar archive of my system to 
recover from if necessary, but I must have made a mistake somehow because 
it was incomplete when I needed it.
