No Celeron predated i686 as far as I know.
If the kernel didn't boot, it would be for some other reason.
To be honest, i386 and i486 are only useful for those specific CPUs.
i586 and i686 were basically the same thing last I looked.
Unless you have a good reason, i686 is a safe bet. It's probably better
to not reconfigure a kernel unless you know what all the options do,
though - it gets such a small proportion of execution time that it's not
worth worrying about how "optimised" it is.
