I've just had a quick peek at the processor options. For celeron they are:

Pentium-II/Celeron(pre-Coppermine)
Pentium-III/Celeron(Coppermine)/Pentium-III Xeon
Pentium-4/Celeron(P4-based)/Pentium-4 M/Xeon

If you can identify which one you have exactly, it should be straight 
forward.

Looking through the gentoo forums, somebody with the same processor was 
indeed using i686.
