So,

Does anyone here use LyX, and if so, do you create your own layouts?

Have you ever tried? Did you find it easy/hard, etc? Was there some
guide you followed?

I'm hoping to get some technical authors to start using it, but the
basic formatting isn't great, and setting up a layout is certainly
beyond the means of the authors, it seems.
