Thanks for this and other suggestions. I'm expecting the school to want to
get the server through its regular suppliers. The spec you've
suggested is modest compared to some of the servers they're having to
get in (for instance for SIMS). We might use it to host the website
as well - I'm looking and Mambo/Joomla - but I'd expect that to get
far less usage than Moodle.

I was told "we've nothing against open source, we're just worried about
integration", so it seemed appropriate to authenticate users against
Active Directory and backup onto already established (windows) systems.
If I can demonstrate moodle and LAMP are reliable they might decide to
use a Linux based backup system at some point. At the moment file
permissions/ownerships aren't preserved (I think - I should check). As
everything's owned by apache / mysql I hadn't got concerned about it.
