Thanks for pointing me that wasy. Perhaps I should have mentioned it's
 going to be used to clone windows hdd in a school where they've no  
 linux experience but have an £800 pound box they use which is about
  to conk out. As far as I can tell ghost for linux gives them a kernel
 and some tools (probably including dd) plus some shell scripts to
  provide an interface on a bootable CD - in other words what you've
 suggested plus some hand holding
