Some time ago I mentioned that vmware-server was free of charge during the 
beta-test period. It's now out of beta and it's still free. Well worth a 
look - there's even a continuing effort to get it into Gentoo Linux. I'm 
running that version now, with just a few more wrinkles to sort out. The 
standard vmware-server and vmware-server-console packages are available in 
RPM format and, I think, as a standard tarball.
