I backup to an external USB harddrive (a normal ide harddrive in a box
 with a USB connection). It seems like a reasonable way  of doing it,
  but I've not yet had cause to need it. Obviously no good against the
 house burning down, and hopefully the surge protector will stop a
 spike destroying all the hardware that's plugged into the same set of sockets
