[sheflug] Backups and Instant messaging

Hi all,

It's time for me to buy a new computer as my trusty Athlon 900 can't  
really cope with the pictures from my digital camera. I've picked out a  
box to buy, but I need to rethink my backup strategy now that I have  
more than a CD's worth of photos. Plan A is to start archiving in a  
logical manner onto DVD. Plan B being SW raid which has the advantage  
of being easy once setup but useless against theft. What do you all  
actually use to backup your data and does it work well?

Secondly I'm thinking of getting a camera so that I can use instant  
messaging to video chat with my apple owning friends. Sadly the SW side  
of things looks grim, gaim used to be better than the official win32  
clients but development seems to have stopped, is there a client out  
there which will easily interface with the AIM network nd which  
supports video?
