Believe me, when your laptop either boots or hangs depending what it's
plugged into, the old naming system quickly gets annoying.

If you haven't already, I would have a look into LVM: all the fun of
disk partitioning and RAID arrays, but without the silly limitations.
You can even move partitions between disks while they're still live! :)

In all seriousness, the /dev naming scheme is probably on the way out.
