Can you see if it prints directly?
Create a very simple text file called test.txt using only standard characters.
>From a console, use the command:-
lp test.txt
Did it print out correctly?
What device does it say it printed out to?
Mine comes back with:-
black@box:~$ lp ./test.txt
request id is LocalPrintShop-202 (1 file(s))
black@box:~$
And the page prints:-
Hello World
LocalPrintShop happens to be the name of one of my print queues for a locally
attached printer.
Do you have hplip and hplip-ppds loaded? This should then work with a print
class of DJ3600.
For my HP laser I had problems everytime I set it up if I hit the test printer
button. As long as I don't, it works perfectly.
On one of the forums is a solution

Equally so the end of the thread at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=239772&highlight=3940
might help
