Maybe I am talking rubbish!

Registered users of the network can log in to our applications servers using
the FreeNX clients. Users then see a standard Ubuntu desktop with a range of
applications available - e.g. OOo, Gimp etc. We still need to do some tidying
up of the applications available as things like screen savers can kick in at
the server end and start loading both the server and the network. We have one
particular user who logs in from home via a standard dial-up landline,
downloads loads of stuff to his home directory on the server, then comes into
our community centre to burn this onto CD. Very enterprising use of our
broadband backhaul, but once he has started stuff downloading he then goes to
work, causing his session to run a screen-saver over our backhaul. Other
familiar desktop applications which refer to server-local hardware devices
(like CD burning) are not useful. Printing via CUPS to local printers appears
to work, but this is not implemented as we initially thought and there are
some firewalling problems when trying to do this from outside our wireless
network.
HTH, but I'm sure Alex can tell us more...
