I'm referring to present day working practices and social issues and
not the local exchange. However, my own exchange is Malin Bridge
which as the crow flies is about two to three miles away. According
to BT this is about 6 to 12 miles away. How they manage to put that
much line between me and their exchange I've no idea. What happens
if you complain to BT or OTELO about this ? Nothing. You can
whistle. A complaint to your own Member of Parliament is also
ignored.

As a side note which is even more off topic. I have a friend over in
Bolton who works for the University of Salford. He's the senior IT
man. Just by chance he happens to be a Plusnet customer who used to
be a Zen Internet customer. His bandwidth is "up to 8Mb" but it's
more like 300K. His telephone exchange is just across the road from
his house. How do BT manage to put six miles of wire between him and
the building across the road ? This is Thatcher's and Major's legacy
for the UK communications industry at work.
