[Sheflug] getting dhcp from cable with linux

Hi
I've just had cable installed and to test it I fired up windows,
plugged the laptop into the modem and instantly got an IP through dhcp. I
rebooted into linux and no joy, dhcp just timed out.

I've watched packet traces and the dhcp request is being sent out and
dhcp offers are coming back but the client is ignoring/reject them. I've
tried arch linux, knoppix, bsd, openwrt and a cable router, none of them
can get an IP. Windows just works. Has any one else had this problem? I
really need a way to fix it so I can get my network built up rather than
just having to rely on a single windows laptop for all my internet
activity.

I've also tried hand setting the IP stuff but that didn't work. Watching
the TX/RX count in ifconfig shows that loads of data is coming back in
response to my requests on all the platforms.

The modem is a motorola 5100 surfboard.

Thanks

Robin
