Sorry to hear things seem to have fallen apart at partition stage.
Can you cut and paste the contents of /etc/fstab?
And would you also be able to do the following (need to be root) :
1. run 'fdisk /dev/hda'
2. enter the letter 'p'
3. exit fdisk by entering 'q'
4. copying the results here.
5. run the command 'df -h'
6. Copy the results here.

which talks about the different directories that occur under a Linux distro.
It is not possible to say why you can't add your original data files to
the new system. There isn't enough info here to determine where the
problem is and it depends whether. by root directory, you mean '/' or
'/root' .
If you've put one large partition on as the root directory '/' then
you should have no problem having a '/home' directory.
It just simply won't be in a separate partition.
