Thought I should get back to the list about this. I had to reboot the
machine to do something else and mythtv-backend started up fine at
boot time. Then after running apt-get update and apt-get upgrade the
following came up on the console...

apt-get upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
Setting up mythtv-backend (0.20-svn20070223-0.0) ...
udev active, devices will be created in /dev/.static/dev/
mythbackend already running, use restart instead.

So, I am now able to update/upgrade but running restart goes back to
square one again until I reboot. Strange.
