It's a lot safer and less messy if you put the CD in a plastic bag
first.  (You can re-use the same bag until it gets holey, to avoid a big
plastic-bag footprint.)

So I think I'll just keep doing that.  (I had expected a CD-shredder to
break CDs up, not just scratch up the surfaces.)
