Is /lib/cpp a link to /usr/bin/cpp on your system? It is on mine...
maybe it's worth running /lib/cpp and seeing what it's become? :)
Alternatively, you could try 'CPP=/usr/bin/cpp ./configure ...'?
Ooh - I've just remembered, you wanted me to email you about the SIF
