At the risk of appearing frivolous (and seeing as we've just traced a
major performance problem down to a dodgy network port on our LTSP
server, I'm feeling quite pleased...)

Real programmers use:

echo -e '#!/usr/bin/perl -w\nprint "Hello world";'  > test.pl

We don't need no steenkin' editor... :)
