I use a vpn to connect to a couple of schools in Sheffield. The vpn
provider uses (I think) a cisco setup, but as far as I'm aware it
shouldn't matter what they use. I use vpnc-connect on Mint (based on
Ubuntu). There are some settings in /etc/vpnc/default.conf which I've
put in, information provided by the vpn provider. The lines
in /etc/vpnc/default.conf are
IPSec gateway vpn.yhgfl.net
IPSec ID XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXxx
IPSec secret XXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
Xauth username XXXXXXXXXXXxx
DNSUpdate no
Then on the command line sudo vpnc-connect and supply a vpn password
(which changes each time - I've got a dongle which gives me a fresh
number each time). It's all command line stuff, but works seemlessly
and reliably. To disconnect it's sudo vpnc-disconnect The last line
in the config file is to stop your /etc/resolv.conf file being
overwritten. Without it, I couldn't use the internet (or anything
needing adns server) if I was connected to the vpn.
Hope this helps
David
