This might sound stupid but ......  just like OpenSuSE I and a lot of 
other people find it best to blow the whole lot away after backing up 
your data and to start from scratch once again.

At least that way you won't end up with a large pile of bugs which no 
one else will be experiencing.

(right ... back to painting the fence outsode the front door .... )
