I have a Huawei usb dongle from Vodaphone, which works with my Asus
eeePc. As far as I could tell, the dongles available from Vodaphone and
3 are all Huawei units, and all seem to be supported by Linux, as long
as the Linux distro is up to the job (with recent enough kernel). The
devices work as ppp modems, so in one way it's a bit like stepping back
in time a few years, except that the eeePc has a nice little control
panel to start and stop the device, which really does "just work"!
Apparently the latest Ubuntu also has a UI to start and stop your mobile
dongle.
I've not tried making the thing work on any other Linux systems, but I
planned to add it to a Debian Etch system as an alternate route to the
internet. Needless to say, I've simply not had the time...
best,
Seb James
