What I found was that there is a bug in the Ubuntu 8.04 version of 
wvdial such that you have to remove the Stupid Mode = line.

Seems that 3 work it so that your account is enabled until such time 
as you first of all log in with a winduhs box.  At that point some 
software is downloaded (whacking great security hole) and then your 
account is switched on.   After that you can transfer the USB dongle 
back to your Linux laptop and everything works fine.  I didn't know 
that when I sent my first message to the list. Took me some hours of 
trouble shooting to find out.  Of course, don't bother to contact the 
Three support team :)  Because they don't know either.
