Thanks for the pointers. I'd got something off-the-shelf in mind. It hadn't
occurred to me to look for a NAS OS but it makes sense. I'll have a play
with it

Not sure if you can still get hold of one but the NSLU2 are good devices and you can install openwrt on them so they are good to play with as well as doing your storage:
