My brother-in-law (not an IT expert) bought a Dell laptop with Ubuntu
pre-installed (7.10, as far as I can remember). It seems to be
generally going OK, but does seem to break something whenever he tries
a distribution upgrade (at least, that's when I get to hear about it).

I'm not sure quite how much support you get out of Dell though (but it
might be better with a business account, rather than a home user).
