I'd look at thinkpads generally (although they can be expensive... unless you 
are happy with refurbs)  They are extremely well supported under any 
distribution you might wish to use and the build quality is superb.  You can 
get them without an OS or with Windows/Linux installed.  The other bonus is 
that they come in a variety of form factors from sub-notebooks (the X Series) 
which are very light but very functional, through to Desktop replacements.

I should probably add that I use one (of a long line) as does my other half 
and I have generally recommended them to companies whenever I have been asked 
(although most ended up buying HP laptops, which, whilst cheap don't always 
seem to last very long...)
