I've not bought a laptop myself; though I do have a Dell desktop which
was bought with Ubuntu 8.04. It works fine for me and appears to have
offered good value.

I have heard good things about Thinkpads. If you want the best support
for the installed Linux (and a choice of distro, I believe), you might
consider buying them through John Pinner and Linux Emporium.
