That doesn't sound right to me. I thought a standard line operated at a
nominal 1V, whereas microphones are in the millivolt or microvolt range.
Overloading an input circuit by 1000 times seems not a good idea!
It sounds as though the other device being discussed has an input that can
be switched internally between two circuits. How this can be cheaper than
sticking another socket on is just one more of life's little mysteries.
