I tried to start some years ago. So much rubbish fell down the back of 
my neck when I tried to do it that I gave up.  Too much hassle.  Same 
problem with community Wi-Fi.  

In the absence of anything else we use this list to ask questions and 
the Phorum.  Which more or less works.  For anything else see ..

That was how most of us learned the first few steps.   Other than that 
Running Linux or Linux in a Nutshell from O'Reilly.  Plenty of other
