Have you got the right permissions on the driver ?  In some previous 
versions the default permissions were set the wrong way.  Google 
search for that.  Not sure if it's in this list...

Don't know if yours is the Perfection 3170.  You did download and 
install the back end driver from the sane site didn't you ?
