Interesting point.  On my "big computer" I tend to move over to the num
pad if I'm entering 4 digits (or more), and I find it frustrating trying
to enter numbers, even not in very "large quantities" on my laptop, so I
was thinking about the combined device as a compromise between having a
num pad and packing even more paraphernalia.
