I know that engineering and science projects have to be paid for. I
did 11 years of heavy engineering. What I don't agree with is this
form of financing. Fortunately for us there are plenty of other
versions of GNU/Linux out there. Quite a few of which are based on
Ubuntu and Debian. If you aren't quite sure have a look here...
I don't have any objections to this, and it's not strictly a paywall
since you can still download without paying anything. What I do think
is more dubious is the "spam on the desktop" paradigm in the 12.10 dash
search. That seems like a classic antifeature.
In terms of monetising open source I'd like to see a unified donation
mechanism. So you might have a button, or something on the menu of each
program, which is a "donate to this project" feature, and has a
standardised interface and payment process. Currently you can donate to
projects, but usually it involves going fishing on the relevant web
site.
