I was thinking something like that. If they had some software that
was different from any other I could see why they want you to pay for
it. Ubuntu Server is good but it's a bit of a specialised market and
you can always use Fedora or something similar. Not much point in
asking for a voluntary contribution when the whole thing is properly
funded anyway.
