There's a couple of options.. Titanium Backup (from the Market) does a
pretty good job backing stuff up to SD card, as would Koush's Helium Backup
which is an app and associated Windows/Linux/Mac application (He's a CM
developer), if you are looking to backup and restore apps and data. Helium
is here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon

Personally I usually use one of the above, and then also go as far as
having installed the Clockwork Recovery on the phone and then do a full
nandroid backup from that (again to sd card), which lets you restore
everything back as it was (its a full image of all the parititions).

The only problem with that is the new easy cyanogen installers probably
don't make it obvious where to stop the install (or how) to do the backup -
although I have never used those.

What device are you trying to install on? What specifically are you worried
about loosing? If its data from apps you can probably rely on the above if
the apps are well written and store stuff where the backup programs expect
it to be.

One critical thing to remember is if the app backs up to SD card only (most
of them do this), and you have a device such as Nexus 4/5 where there is no
actual SD card, you need to boot back into android and copy the files off
the emulated SD card BEFORE installing CM, as the backups would be lost if
you forgot.

(apologies for the formatting of this reply I'm on an android phone and the
mail client isn't great for formatting)
