comm3, you say? Sounds like it's using port 0x3e8, IRQ 4 to me. Check the
BIOS, go to Peripheral Setup (or similar) and check that COM1: is set to
0x3f8, IRQ4

i would love to.... trouble is it's a compaq machine and the bios sucks....
doesn't give access to that type of config :-(

i thought it was pnp because of the way windows changed the port value and
irq ? it worked fine as both comm3 3e8 irq4 and comm4 3f8 irq 3 under
windows.
