do you have the "ethertap" modules compiled and enabled in the kernel?
if so, add the following to your /etc/modules.conf file:

alias tap0 ethertap
alias tap1 ethertap   (if needed)

also make sure that you have the /dev/tap* devices available - see the 
ethertap documentation in the kernel source iof you do not.
