What window manager are you using?

I have that problem with xfig (initial window size bigger than screen)
but I've got a keyboard shortcut that vertically maximises windows. If I
use this on such windows it just shrinks it to the vertical size of the
screen and hey presto, I can use all those buttons again!

I think ~/.Xdefaults sets sizes/fonts etc so you could probably put an
entry in here?
