I haven't bought a USR in about 3 years, but the Sportster I last
bought doesn't recognize data vs fax vs voice calls, and I have to
manually fiddle with lock files to switch it off (it shares a line
with my office phone and the secretaries don't seem to be able to
speak v.32bis ;). It could also be that it is interacting badly with
my U's piece of junk PBX (over 20 years old), but just wanted to warn
you on that if you're thinking about using it as an incoming server.
Other than that I've been very happy with every USR modem I've bought
(12 of 'em since 1980).

The Courier line is very well reputed (and equally pricey), but the
Sportsters have a reputation for being rough around the edges.

The Hylafax (or whatever it's called now) fax server has a long,
up-to-date, list of modems. I think there's also a modem HOWTO.
