When I was at varsity (Otago U, here in NZ), we did assembly language on
the Vax systems, very little C, and the final-year software engineering
paper used Ada, which I've happily forgotten. Until the mid-90s, the
commerce department there were teaching Cobol, which they scrapped in
favour of Delphi, and C++. These days I just do it in shell scripts where
possible, otherwise perl or C depending on how each suits the task at hand.
