Try an unconditional DOS format (format c: /u), or even use the BIOS low
level format utility to take note of the bad tracks (do NOT format the
drive tho').
Anyway, give 'em SuSE or Mandrake or whatever. KDE is 'nearly' widoze.
Doesn't crash as much either ;-)
