The "file" command is ideal for things like this. From a console type

file filename

Where filename is the file you don't recognise. If it says data you're
screwed, normally it'll tell you exactly what it is. extentions are a lame
way to associate files with 'type' the /etc/magic database used by the "file"
command has been used since before DOS existed.

I suspect you'll find this is a loadable module or a tar.
